Childish Friend Cried Abuse, But Panicked When I Reported It

Chapter 4

The police didn't let her go, either—they told her to sit tight and wait for Jason to show up.

One of the female officers leaned in and whispered in my ear.

"This friend of yours... does she have some kind of thing for this? Beaten black and blue by her own husband, and still lovesick over him."

"Maybe you should talk some sense into her more often. If it's really like this, she needs to get away from bad people sooner rather than later."

I almost laughed out loud.

Even a stranger could see how badly Nellie was blinded by love.

Just then, Jason came storming into the police station.

"Hey! Nellie! You call the cops on me because you don't want to be with me anymore?"

Nellie rushed over to him, all worked up.

"No, no, sweetie hubby~ Baby doesn't want to divorce you~"

"Baby was just upset that you won't take Baby out to the amusement park to ride the carousel~"

The two of them launched right into their loving-couple act in front of everyone.

Jason gave a soft snort.

Nellie clung to his arm and cooed.

"Sweetie hubby~ don't be mad~"

"It's really not Baby's fault! It's all Baby's bad friend! She tricked Baby into divorcing you!"

As she said it, she raised her hand and pointed at me.

"She said the divorce would get Baby most of the assets, and then once Baby got them she'd split them fifty-fifty with Baby!"

"She's a bad person! She tried to fool Baby, but Baby didn't believe her nonsense. Baby loves her sweetie hubby~"

Jason turned his rage on me.

"Hey! I know you—you're Carolyn Swanson, right? The one who knelt at someone's feet like a lapdog for ten years and got played for a fool!"

"When my wife and I got married, you had a thing for my good looks, so you meddled to try to split us up and take her place!"

"I didn't want you back then, and now you want to talk us into divorcing so you can get your revenge on me! You vicious woman, you're pure poison!"

"Nobody wants you, you can't get a husband, so you go around wrecking other people's relationships! No wonder nobody looks twice at trash like you! Even if I got you for free, I wouldn't take you!"

Not one word of what he said was true.

The reason I'd advised Nellie against marrying him was that he was short-tempered, stingy, and disrespectful to Nellie and her family.

I never imagined Nellie would be so afraid I still had my eye on her husband that she'd tell him this many lies in front of him.

But I'd guessed long ago that Nellie would try to pin it on me, and I'd prepared my counterattack in advance.

I gave Nellie a faint smile.

"Nellie, since you can't bear to lose your husband, then I won't keep it a secret for you anymore."

I turned and looked calmly at Jason.

"Jason, Nellie already knows your secrets. She came to me meaning to ruin your reputation and then divorce you."

"This is the evidence she hired me to dig up—not just proof of your affair, but proof that you, as the finance director, quietly embezzled company funds."

"Now that she doesn't want a divorce, I'll reluctantly hand the evidence over for the two of you to deal with yourselves."

I took out a stack of documents and tossed them down in front of them.

"From now on the two of you should stay together and stop being so fickle. The way I see it, Nellie really does love you and can't bear to lose you."

Nellie went pale with shock. "Who told you to go investigating Baby's sweetie hubby?"
