During my second month in the private hospital, waiting for a heart transplant, I was scrolling through my phone to pass the time.

Suddenly, a line of glowing text drifted across the top of my screen:

Before I could even react, the ward door was pushed open. Rebecca Lawson, my husband's first love, walked in.

Instinctively, I switched my phone to video recording mode and slipped it under my blanket.

I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep. I felt her approach my bed, heard the rustle of the IV tube, and then the quiet click of her leaving.
