Chapter 4

Grace’s eyes locked onto mine through the crowd.

Blood trickled from her lip, but her eyes burned with toxic hatred.

I smirked and walked away.

I knew she wouldn't stop.

In my past life, she sold me out. In this life, she’d be even more vicious.

The next afternoon, Scott texted me.

Evelyn, I was wrong about everything. Can we talk?

I stared at my phone and smirked.

In my past life, he was the one who "kindly" took me to the hospital when I fainted.

By the time I woke up, I was in a shipping container.

I replied: Sure.

At 7 PM, I arrived at the secluded restaurant he chose. The private room was soundproofed.

"Evelyn, I was too impulsive." Scott poured me a glass of water, a bitter smile on his face.

"I realized I shouldn't have broken up with you over Grace."

I took the glass, tracing the rim.

The water smelled faintly of almonds. Roofies mixed with a heavy sedative.

In my past life, they did the exact same thing.

While I was being tortured in the cartel compound, Grace mocked me, boasting how she made Scott drug my drink.

Because I trusted him back then, I drank it and fainted in the office.

I looked up, met Scott’s tense eyes, smiled, and drank it.

Dizziness hit almost instantly.

I pretended to lose balance, holding my head while secretly hitting the emergency speed-dial on my phone.

"Evelyn? What's wrong?" Scott asked, pretending to be worried.

I slumped onto the table.

I heard him gasp. He whispered into his phone, "She's out. Come in."

The door opened. The click of high heels drew closer.

"Finally, you're mine." Grace's sweet voice sounded warped with malice.

"Did you really think you won, Evelyn?"

My vision blurred, but I saw her bend down. Her red-manicured nails dug into my chin.

"Don't worry. I'm going to make your life a living hell."

They moved quickly. As they threw a heavy sack over me, my consciousness faded.

But I was smiling.

Because I knew Grace was about to die.

The air inside the sack was hot and suffocating. I kept my eyes closed, letting my body bounce with the car.

The terror of my past life was gone, replaced by cold, calculating patience.

After what felt like hours, there was a violent crash.
